Eve Mahlab, Founder and Managing Director of the Mahlab Group of Companies, and Co-Founder of the Australian Women Donors Network, talked about her commitment to promoting women's interests and the relationship between women and philanthropy. She also discussed the recently launched 'Women Mobilising Millions' campaign that aims to raise awareness of the lack of philanthropic funds reaching women.

Charcoal Lane is a Restaurant in Fitzroy, Melbourne, which serves high-quality modern and native Australian cuisine. Charcoal Lane is a social enterprise launched in 2006, supported by Mission Australia. It aims to give disadvantaged youth the opportunity to train in hospitality and pursue careers in the industry. Reporter Tom Connell took a closer look for Social Business.

New Government Initiatives to Support Social Enterprise:
Senator Ursula Stephens-Parliamentary Secretary for Social Inclusion and the Voluntary Sector announced two new initiatives aimed at supporting social enterprises in July. Senator Stephens appeared on the Social Business program on the day of the announcement.

Evaluation of Kitchen Garden program in Primary Schools:
CEO of the Stephanie Alexander Foundation (SAKGF) Ange Barry, talks about the Kitchen Garden program that is now running in more than 130 primary schools nationally. The program has recently been evaluated by the University of Melbourne. The evaluation shows that in the first two years of the implementation of the SAKGF program in Victorian schools, there are clear changes in children's attitudes, knowledge, skills and confidence in relation to cooking and gardening.


Social Business - July (Seg 3)

National Centre for Indigenous Excellence (NCIE):
The National Centre for Indigenous Excellence is a new not-for-profit organisation that hosts pathway programs and facilities for young indigenous people to help them achieve their dreams and aspirations. Based in the old primary school in Redfern, Sydney, a key purpose of NCIE is to address indigenous disadvantage by investing in the key target areas of sport and recreation, arts and culture, and health and wellbeing.

Social Business - July (Seg 5)

Launch of New Film "Polly & Me":
This month saw the launch of a new short film "Polly & Me", written and directed by award winning documentary filmmaker and head of the Caledonia Foundation, Ian Darling. This film attempts to raise awareness of the issues of addiction, abuse and neglect. The Caledonia Foundation has partnered with over ten charitable organisations working in this area for the outreach and education component of the initiative. Ian Darling will appear on Social Business in September.


About the show

Social Business discusses the latest news in not-for-profit activity, corporate responsibility, philanthropy and volunteering. In conjunction with the Centre for Social Impact, this monthly program focuses on key issues around social entrepreneurship, public and social innovation and the emergence of new social businesses.

It is co-hosted Business Channel presenter Brooke Corte and Dr Peter Shergold, the Macquarie Group Foundation Professor at the Centre for Social Impact. Dr Shergold was a CEO in the Australian Public Service for two decades and for five years from February 2003, was Australia's most senior public administrator, serving as Secretary of the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet. Dr Shergold has significant Board experience in the public, private and 'third' sectors. He is Chair of the National Centre for Vocational Education Research, a non-executive Director of AMP Ltd (listed), Corrs Chambers Westgarth (non-listed) and is the Chairperson of a small venture capital start-up, QuintessenceLabs. He is also Chair of the Australian Rural Leadership Foundation and a Director of the National Centre for Indigenous Excellence and the Sir John Monash Foundation.
